SCHAR ON TARGET IN NEWCASTLE WIN

Switzerland player Fabian Schar was on target as Newcastle United wrapped up their Premier League season with a win at the home of already-relegated Fulham. London club Fulham have beenconfirmed as one of three teams demoted to the English Championship alongside Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion.

Schar scored the second goal for the Magpies in the 2-0 away victory over Fulham after Arsenal loanee Joe Willock had given the visitors a first half lead. Willock gave Newcastle United the lead midway into the first half with a smart finish inside the box before the win was wrapped up by Switzerland player Schar from the penalty spot after Ex-Bournemouth utility player Matt Ritchie was fouled in the box by Fulham right-back Kenny Tete. Switzerland
national team centre back Schar came off the bench to score from 12 yards out for his first goal of the season. He had made 17 appearances for the Magpies before the Fulham game. The Swiss international had come on for the final 17 minutes of the game in the place of Swedish international Emil Krafth.

The win over Fulham made it three wins from the last four games in the Premier League at the end of the season and it moved them up three places from 15th to 12th on the league table.

Willock has been the star of the show for Newcastle United in the final three months of the season . He was responsible for the first goal in the Fulham game after he produced a smart finish in the Cottagers box midway into the first half. The goal took his Premier League tally to eight goals for the season.

English midfielder Willock is on a short-term loan deal at Newcastle United from the Gunners and his strike against Fulham made it only the second Newcastle United player to score in seven Premier League matches in quick succession after club legend Alan Shearer.

LIVERPOOL MIDFIELDER SET FOR ANFIELD EXIT THIS SUMMER

Liverpool and Switzerland international midfielder, Xherdan Shaqiri has been linked with a summer exit from Anfield this summer and it has continued to look highly inevitable that he will not be a Liverpool player next season. The winger was signed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp from Stoke City some seasons ago and has since been a bit-part player at the club.

Although he is said to be an important player in the squad, he has not been able to nail a starting spot in the team and has reportedly revealed his desire to seek first-team opportunities elsewhere.

The signing of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer by Liverpool further dampened Shaqiri’s hopes of becoming a regular starter at the club and he was further reduced to a bench player as well.

Even for the period Jota has been injured this season, the Switzerland international star has still not been a favored option to start games this season under Klopp. The German manager has instead desired to field the trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino. Liverpool have not received any offers for Shaqiri yet, but the Reds are bracing themselves for a couple of bids from different clubs who would want to sign the former Stoke City man in the summer.

Everton were linked with him last summer and if those rumors were true then, the Toffees may well revive their interestand even though Liverpool would be reluctant to sell such a player to their Merseyside rivals, they may not have any option but to allow him to move to Goodison Park, especially if he hands in a transfer request.

Shaqiri has won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles with Liverpool during his time at Anfield and would want more success with the Reds but only if he is guaranteed more playing time.

AZZURRE PITTED AGAINST CROATIA AND SWITZERLAND IN WORD CUP

While the preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022 (Men’s edition) have continued to progress and go as planned, the female version of the tournament is also being planned for and it has been slated to kick off one year after the one in Qatar will start.

The draw for the 2023 Women’s World Cup has been made and while it favors some teams, other teams will be biting their fingers. However, it does mean that all teams have to start making preparations for the tournament, right from selecting their best players who will represent them at the tournament.

The outcome of the draw means that Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia will be in the same group and will play against one another. They have all been drawn in Group G of the qualification round as they continue to prepare for the World Cup ahead.

The Azzurre (Italy) will now have to face the likes of Romania, Moldova, Switzerland, Lithuania, and Croatia as they have all been drawn in the same group. However, the Italy team is seen as the top dog of the group and is expected to seal automatic qualification for the tournament that will be kicking off in the next two years.

Before the draw, Italy were in pot 1, which explains exactly why they were able to avoid teams like Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, England, Germany, France, Denmark, and Spain. There are as many as nine cities across New Zealand and Australia that have been selected as venues that will host the tournament that is set to kick off on the 10th of July 2023 and run till the 20th of August in the same year.

The Netherlands were responsible for knocking out Italy in the quarter-finals of the 2019 edition of this tournament but the Dutch team only managed to finish fourth that year. Italy will be looking forward to having a better campaign this time around.

XHAKA IMPRESSES AS ARSENAL LEFT-BACK

Switzerland national teamskipper Granit Xhakawas named as the left-back replacement for injured first choice Kieran Tierney ahead of the penultimate league game at Sheffield United to the surprise of many Arsenal fans despite the fact that he had previously played in that position on occasions.

The Arsenal fans were expecting backup fullback Cedric Soares or even impressive youngster Bukayo Saka as a left-back rather than Switzerland midfielder Xhaka. The decision to field the Switzerland player as a left-back didn’t come back to haunt Gunners boss Mikel Artetaas his team dispatched bottom team Sheffield United with relative ease. Central striker Alexandre Lacazette scored twice either side of the half-time interval and either side of the second half strike from young forward Gabriel Martinelli to lead Arsenal to a 3-0 away win.

Xhaka and Arsenal were able to build on that big win over Sheffield United with another big victory overSparta Prague in the Europa League. Xhaka continued as a left-back for that crucial Sparta Prague clash. The Gunners needed to win the game or score at least two goals in a score draw to move ahead of the Czech Republic team and into the Europa League semis. Mikel Arteta and his boys were able to more than achieve their target with an emphatic 4-0 win over home team Sparta Prague.

Lacazette scored twice for the Gunners with the first goal coming from the penalty spot, while Ivorian international Nicholas Pepe was the recipient of the first Arsenal goal. Saka scored the other goal for the North Londoners.

Xhaka played at left-back for Arsenal for the third game running for the Fulham game at the weekend but it proved to be his most underwhelming of his three matches at left-back as the two teams played a 1-1 draw with the Gunners salvaging the home draw via the last gasp strike from Eddie Nketiah. England junior international striker Nketiah came off the bench in place of the injured Lacazette to score the Arsenal equaliser.

UEFA European Under-21 Championship Roundup

While the senior national teams are busy battling it out at the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers games looking to secure their spots at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the younger players are handling their own business at the European Under-21 Championship. The tournament is full of surprises already judging by the results of the games that were played on Saturday. While Denmark, Russia, Switzerland, and Portugal have started their businesses on the right foot, teams like France and England still need some improvements to do.

The quartet of Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, and Portugal could be on their way to the quarter-finals of the competition already even with a game each to spare as the tournament looks to unfold more eventful surprises on Sunday. Shockingly, France and England are having a bad time, and both headline the list of teams that could suffer early elimination from the competition. The other teams that are in this precarious situation include Croatia and Iceland.

In Group C, Russia could confirm their passage to the next round if they can defeat France and Denmark avoid defeat against Iceland. Denmark, however, will go through if they secure victory against Iceland and Russia do not taste defeat against France.

In Group D, Portugal will gain access to the next round as long as they can beat England and Switzerland are not beaten by Croatia. Switzerland will secure passage to the best stage if they defeat Croatia and England are not able to defeat Portugal.

Switzerland defeated England on Thursday thanks to a tie-deciding goal from Dan Ndoye, and they will be looking to continue their good run when they take on Croatia in their next Group D fixture on Sunday.

Other results on Saturday:
Group A
Hungary 1-2 Romania (Budapest)
Germany 1-1 Netherlands (Székesfehérvár)
Group B
Slovenia 1-1 Czech Republic (Celje)
Spain 0-0 Italy (Mar

XHAKA HELPS ARSENAL TO DERBY WIN

Switzerland national team skipper Granit Xhaka was one of the best players for Arsenal as they claimed North London Derby spoils at the weekend at the expense of Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur team. Xhaka was a dominant force for the Gunners in midfield as he helped his team to a 2-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby. The Switzerland international went a long way to make up for his mistake in the penultimate league game at Burnley. Granit Xhaka came in for a lot of criticisms after his error led to dropped points against the Clarets. At the point of his mistake, the Gunners were 1-0 ahead through an early goal from club skipper Pierre-EmerickAubameyang. Arsenal were on their way to a half-time lead before the mistake from the Switzerland player. The Switzerland national team captain had his pass intercepted by Burnleystriker Chris Woods and into the back of the net for the Clarets’ equaliser.Xhaka was able to redeem himself with an assured performance against Spurs in the derby on Sunday evening. He was one of the best players on the pitch as Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette scored the winning goal in the second half to secure the slender win for his team against a Spurs team that finished the game with ten men after Erik Lamela was sent off for two yellow cards. His second yellow card was for the hand in the face of Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney. Lamela has come on as a first half substitute for the injured Son Heung-Min, who went off with a hamstring problem.Lamela went from hero to villain during the derby game with his red card. He was the recipient of a wonder goal in the first half before Martin Odegaardequalised for Arsenal on the stroke of half-time after good work from Tierney thus paving the way for the winner from Lacazette from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez in the box.

NEWCASTLE UNITED FANS HAVE THEIR SAY AFTER SCHAR PICKS ANOTHER INJURY

Following his most recent injury setback that will see him miss out on football for some months, Newcastle United fans have called on the club to let go of Fabian Schar and instead bring back Florian Lejeune. Switzerland international defender Schar was a victim of a knee injury in Newcastle United’s 3-2 win over Southampton on Saturday at St. James’s Park, and he is set to be reportedly out of action till after some months.

He picked up the injury after playing 75 minutes of football and it forced the Magpies to be reduced to 9 men after they had completed all their allowed substitutions. The defender tweeted an update after the match on Twitter where he revealed that he is currently in a situation that is difficult to accept by the fans. He said he was feeling very good as he played on the pitch, and hailed the team’s effort and spirit, but added that it’s going to be a hard time after it was confirmed that he will be missing in action for up to some months.

He also said that his goal now is to work harder so he can find his way back to playing football again as soon as possible and also make it to the Euros.

It was a costly win for Newcastle who also had striker Callum Wilson and Javier Manquillo injured in the 3-2 win over Southampton. Following the turn of events, Newcastle fans have urged the club to allow Schar to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer since his current contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

They have also demanded that the Tyneside club call Florian Lejeune back from his loan stint at Spanish La Liga side Alves. It’s a big setback for Schar, who only returned from a previous injury recently.
