PREMIER LEAGUE:XHAKA RETURN FOR ARSENAL

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka provided the North London giants with a timely boost before the busy festive period following his early return from the knee injury that has forced him to watch his teammates from the sidelines. The Switzerland national team skipper was not expected to feature for Arsenal until the New Year’s Day at least only for him to return to action one month earlier than expected.

Switzerland star Xhakahad missed the last nine Arsenal games in all competitions because of the aforementioned knee injury before he made his return from injury during the Premier League clash with Everton on Monday. The former Borussia Moenchengladbach player was absent for eight league games, with the other game coming in the Carabao Cup.

Xhaka sustained the knee injury that ruled him out of action for the last two months during the North London Derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the end of September on the Premier League football scene. He formed a good central midfield partnership with Ghanaian player Thomas Partey as Arsenal run riot against Spurs in the first half on the way to a 3-1 home win over their North London rivals. Emile Smith-Rowe, Pierre-EmerickAubameyang and Bukayo Saka were on target for the Gunners as they faced into a three-goal lead at the half-time break before Spurs pulled one back through Son Heung-Min in the second half.

Switzerland international Xhaka returned from his knee injury for the Premier League clash at out-of-form Everton, but he could not stop his team from losing 2-1 to the Toffees despite the fact that they scored the first goal of the game. Norwegian star Martin Odegaard edged Arsenal ahead on the stroke of half-time only for hosts Everton to score two goals in the last ten minutes to win the game and end an eight-game winless run.

ARSENAL: XHAKA RETURNS TO LIGHT TRAINING

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has returned to light training as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury. The Switzerland senior national team player has been missing since he suffered the knee problem towards the end of the North London Derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the league at the end of September.

Switzerland midfielder Xhaka posted pictures of him in light training on his official Instagram account last week.

Xhaka was linked with a move away from Arsenal in the summer with Jose Mourinho and AS Roma keen to sign him on the back of a phenomenal Euro 2020 tournament in the colours of the Switzerland team, but the Italians were unable to pay the asking fee from the Gunners. The Arsenal player was one of the best midfielders at Euro 2020 as Switzerland reached the last eight of the competition for the first time in their history.

Arsenal gave Xhaka a new deal afterhis proposed move to AS Roma collapsed and he went on to start the first five games in the Premier League this season until his unfortunate injury against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium. His injury overshadowed the impressive 3-1 win recorded by the Gunners thanks to the goals from Emile Smith-Rowe, Pierre-EmerickAubameyang and Bukayo Saka. Arsenal took a three-goal lead at the half-time break before South Korean national team star Son Heung-Min pulled one back in the second half to prevent his team from suffering a three-goal defeat in the league for the third time in a row.

Xhaka has missed the last six matches in league at Arsenal because of his knee injury, but that has not stopped the Gunners from moving up on the league standings. Arsenal are up to fifth place on the Premier League log afterthe win over Watford at the weekend. In total,Xhakahas missed the last seven games in all competitions.

Switzerland midfielder Xhaka was ruled out for three months at the time of his injury and the expectation is thathe will return to full fitness at the end of next month. Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has agreed a new deal at the club as reported by English publication Football London. It was revealed that the Switzerland player will stay in North London after his proposed move to Italian Serie A team AS Roma didn’t see the light of the day.

Jose Mourinhois a big fan of Xhaka and he wanted the Switzerland national team skipper at Roma this summer but the club was unable to meet the asking price from the Gunners. Arsenal demanded for €20m from Roma for Xhaka but the Italians were able to offer just €12m plus €3m in add-ons.

Xhaka had two years left on his Arsenal deal and the club has moved to tie him down to a longer deal by offering a new contract that takes him till 2025.

North London club Arsenal signed Xhaka from German Bundesliga team Borussia Moenchengladbachin 2016. The Gunners paid around £35m to sign the Switzerland national team player. He was once the Gunners captain before Gabonese international Pierre-EmerickAubameyang replaced himafter an altercation with fans at the Emirates Stadium during a London Derby clash with Crystal Palace in the league two years ago.Aubameyang was his assistant before the incident with the Arsenal fans.

Xhaka, 28, had agreed personal terms with German team Hertha Berlin at the start of last year before Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay at the club. Artetahad just been appointedas the new Gunners boss.

The same situation happened with AS Roma though the Italians didn’t agree to the asking price from Arsenal for Xhaka. The Switzerland player featured for the Gunners in the first game of the new Premier League campaign at Brentford. Xhaka and Arsenal were beaten 2-0 at Brentford in their London Derby clash on Friday night.

SHAQIRI CONFIRMS HIS INTENTION TO LEAVE LIVERPOOL

XherdanShaqiri has revealed his desire to leave Liverpool as he wants to play regular football starting from next season. The Switzerland international attacker has been limited to only a little amount of game time under Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as he prefers Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Diogo Nota ahead of Shaqiri in the pecking order.
The winger, who is a constant fixture for Switzerland in the national team, has lamented a lack of opportunities under Klopp and has hinted that he is now fed up and is ready to leave Anfield as early as this summer in a heart-to-heart conversation with the Reds boss.

Shaqiri featured for Liverpool last season but only on a limited basis and although Klopp continued to affirm him that he would get more game time, it has been a pretty tough decision for the former Borussia Dortmund manager to play Shaqiri ahead of any of his preferred starting attackers. A decent signing from Stoke City, Shaqiri came to Liverpool with the hunger to earn himself a starting role at the club after impressing Klopp but he has not been able to do so and it has seemingly affected his mentality.

The former Bayern Munich star has now revealed that while he still has a lot of respect for Jurgen Klopp and his decisions as the Liverpool manager, he wants to leave the club and start a new challenge elsewhere.

It is currently unknown where the player will end up this summer as there hasn’t been any report of any club showing a sign in signing him so far, butit is reported that some unnamed Premier League sides have registered an interest in him. He is expected to reach a decision in the coming days and sort out his future at Anfield.

TWO SWITZERLAND STARS COULD SWITCH CLUBS THIS SUMMER

Two of Switzerland’s best players Xherdan Shaqiri and Grant Xhaka could be leaving Liverpool and Arsenal respectively, according to reports. Shaqiri is said to be highly frustrated about his extreme lack of football action at Liverpool under manager Jurgen Klopp and he is said to have evaluated his future and is keen to leave Anfield this summer. Shaqiri’s favorite role in the attack is currently occupied by Mohamed Salah and it is a difficult task for him to displace the Egypt international star from the starting eleven unless he is out injured or suspended.

Shaqiri has long been seeking a move away from Liverpool but has since not gotten the sort of offer he would love to agree to. Klopp has often admitted that even though he loves the Switzerland international attacker, it is quite hard for him to give him more game time than he is currently giving him. Currently, some unnamed clubs are said to have approached the winger’s camp in a bid to convince him to seal a move away from the Reds this summer, but it is not yet clear whether he has agreed to negotiate with those clubs.

On the other hand, Shaqiri’s international teammate, Granit Xhaka, also wants a move away from Arsenal and is reportedly close to joining AS Roma in a few days. Roma’s new manager José Mourinho is keen to work with the Swiss midfielder especially after his Euros heroics that saw him help his country to knock out the tournament’s favorites France from the competition.

Xhaka has reportedly agreed personal terms with Roma and he could be heading to Italy where he will be continuing his professional career as he also would love to have a closer shot at winning titles – something he believes he can achieve at Roma.

SWITZERLAND FACE TOUGH ITALY TEST

Switzerland are potentially facing a big battle to qualify for the knockout stage at the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament from Group A ahead of the Italy game on Wednesday. The Swiss team will face an Italian team who have won their last nine matches without conceding a single goal.
Hosts Italy will start the game against Switzerland at the StadioOlimpico in Rome as favourites especially after the way they dispatched Turkey in the opening game of the tournament. The Italians made light work of an in-form Turkish team especially in the second half to deliver an impressive 3-0 win. All the three goals were scored in the second half of the game.

Italy were clearly the better team in the first half of their Group A clash with Turkey but they could not break their opponents down as the two teams played out a goalless draw. Turkey adopted a defensive approach and it paid off in the first half but the second half was different as the Italians took their opponents to the cleaners.

The Italians took the lead at the start of the second half when Turkey defender MerihDemiral put through his own net off the cross from Italy winger Domenico Berardi. Lazio striker Ciro Immobile doubled the leadfor the home team before Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne wrapped up the emphatic victory.

Switzerland will face the in-form Italy on the back of the disappointing 1-1 draw with Wales. After a goalless draw in the first half, the Swiss team took the lead through BreelEmbolo after just four second half minutes. Wales then levelled proceedings through Kiefer Moore with sixteen minutes left on the clock to earn the share of the spoils.

As things stand in Group A, Italy lead the group with three points, while Wales and Switzerland are joint second with one point apiece. Turkey are last on the group standings with zero point ahead of their second group game against Wales on Wednesday.
