HITZFELD TOUTS BAYERN

Former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is currently in charge of the Switzerland national team, has said that his former club will win the Champions League final at Wembley this season. Bayern have made it into the third Champions League final in four seasons, but they are yet to win a major European trophy since 2001. They are also the last German team to have won a European trophy.

They will be facing archrivals Borussia Dortmund in the final of the competition after managing to overcome Barcelona. Dortmund, meanwhile, managed to overcome the stiff opposition from Real Madrid to reach their first Champions League final after a long time.

Due to the overwhelming strength of a squad, Bayern are the favourites to lift the title according to Hitzfeld. Bayern have been simply extraordinary this season, as they have romped to the Bundesliga title in record time. They also have the DFB Pokal final coming up as well in what could be a historic season for the club. Bayern Munich manager Heynckes will be replaced by Guardiola at the end of the season, but he will be going out on a high according to Hitzfeld. Bayern Munich managed to destroy Barcelona, who was widely adjudged to be the best team in the world, 7-0 on aggregate in the semifinals.

"This is a dream for German football that there is this final. And then, for me, also with Dortmund and Bayern being my former clubs. I believe that Bavaria are the slight favourites, but both meet at eye level. Dortmund have won some games against Bayern in the last three years. Form on the day will decide. Dortmund have nothing to lose. They have achieved more than they could have imagined this season," said Hitzfeld in a recent interview to the German tabloid Bild.
