HITZFELD WISHES GOMEZ WAS SWISS

The Switzerland national team manager and the former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has said that the Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez is one of the best in the world.

The 27-year-old striker suffered heart breaks with both the club and the national team last season. While Bayern Munich finishers were runners up in three major competitions, the national team Germany was also defeated in the semi-final stage of the Euro 2012. Germany was expected to win the tournament comfortably, but suffered an uncharacteristic defeat at the hands of Italy in the semifinals.

Speaking ahead of the start of the new German Bundesliga season, the Switzerland national team manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has said that Mario Gomez has what it takes to get Bayern Munich to the top of the table. It has been two seasons since Bayern Munich last lifted the Bundesliga title, which is a phenomenon that does not happen always. Even though Bayern Munich are extremely strong, their main competitors Borussia Dortmund have also strengthened during the summer and will be providing a formidable challenge according to the former Bayern Munich manager. Ottmar Hitzfeld has recently seen the Swiss national team win 4-2 against Croatia in a friendly match.

This would have given him enough confidence going into the World Cup qualifying matches that will see the Swiss play against the likes of Slovenia and Albania in the first round of matches. Once these two matches are over, Switzerland will be facing the likes of Norway and Cyprus as they look to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. "He is one of the best strikers in the world. Mario has had a great season at Bayern with a lot of goals. He was good at Euro 2012 as well. I thought he was about to explode after the game versus Greece, but then he didn't play. I couldn't understand that decision," Hitzfeld told TZ.
